Folklore of Belgium

Belgium is a country in Europe with a lot of interesting stories and legends that have been passed down from generation to generation. These stories are called folklore.

One popular legend is about a giant named Druon Antigoon. He lived along the River Scheldt and demanded tolls from anyone who wanted to cross the river. If anyone refused to pay, he would cut off their hand and throw it into the river! That sounds scary, doesn't it? But, one day, a brave hero named Brabo defeated Druon Antigoon and cut off his own hand. He threw the giant's hand into the river, and that's how the city of Antwerp got its name (in Dutch, "hand throwing").

Another legend is about a creature called the Nix. It's a water spirit that lives in lakes and rivers. The Nix looks like a beautiful woman or a handsome man and can lure people into the water. If anyone swims too close, the Nix will drag them underwater and keep them there forever. So, if you ever see someone that seems too good to be true near a body of water, be careful!

Belgium is also known for its many fairy tales, like the story of Cinderella. In the Belgian version, called Cendrillon, the fairy godmother is replaced by a fairy tree. Cendrillon's father makes a wish under the tree, and it grants him everything he needs to make his daughter happy. It's a heartwarming story that teaches us about kindness and the power of wishes.

Overall, Belgium has a lot of interesting stories and legends that have been passed down for centuries. They teach us about bravery, caution, and kindness, and they're a fun way to learn about the country's history and culture.
