Forage fish

Forage fish are like little snacks for bigger fish and animals who like to eat fish. They are like the chips or crackers at a party, they aren't the main dish but they are important to make everything taste good.

Forage fish are very small fish that usually live in big groups, and they mostly eat plankton (tiny ocean plants and animals). There are lots of different kinds of forage fish, like anchovies, sardines, and herring.

Even though forage fish are small, they are really important because they are food for bigger animals that we like to eat, like tuna and salmon. Plus, lots of seabirds and other animals depend on forage fish for their food.

So, forage fish may be tiny, but they play a HUGE role in the ocean's food chain!
