ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Foundation species

Foundation species are plants or animals that are very important to the environment. They provide food and shelter for other plants and animals, and they also help keep soil, air, and water healthy. Foundation species can make an area better for other species to grow and thrive. For example, coral reefs act as a foundation species in the ocean. They create an environment where lots of other sea plants and animals can find food and protection.
