Fraction (mathematics)

A fraction is a way of showing how two numbers relate to each other. To make a fraction, you divide one number by another. Imagine you are trying to share 7 cookies between 2 people. Each person would get 3 and a half cookies. You could show this using a fraction: 3 1/2 or 3.5. The top number (3) is called the numerator and the bottom number (1/2 or .5) is called the denominator. The numerator tells you how many cookie each person would get and the denominator tells you how many pieces each cookie was cut into.
