Free-software license

A free-software license is like a contract between someone who creates software (the author or programmer) and someone who wants to use it (the user). The author of the software gives permission to the user to use their software under certain conditions. Usually, these conditions mean that the user can use the software for free, but they can't change the software or use it to make money.
