Freedom Ride (Australia)

A freedom ride was a big bus trip that happened in Australia a long time ago.

Before the freedom ride, Aboriginal people (who are the native people of Australia) were treated unfairly. They were not allowed to go to certain places like swimming pools, cafes, and cinemas. They even had to sit at the back of the bus when they travelled. This was not fair, as everyone should have the same rights and be treated equally.

So, a group of people decided to go on a big bus trip to show people how things needed to change. The bus trip was called a freedom ride, because they wanted to show everyone that everyone had the freedom to go wherever they wanted to.

The people on the bus ride were a mix of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and white Australians. They went to many different towns and cities to show people that everyone deserved to be treated equally. Some people were happy to see them, but others were not. Some people even threw eggs and apples at them to make them go away.

The freedom ride was very important because it made people realize that things needed to change. After the ride, new laws were made to make sure that everyone had the same rights. This meant that Aboriginal people could go into cafes, cinemas, and swimming pools just like everybody else.

That's how the freedom ride helped to make Australia a fairer place for everyone.
