ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Freeze-drying

Freeze-drying is a special way of preserving things, kind of like putting them in a time capsule! Imagine you had some grapes and you wanted to keep them forever without them going bad. First, you would freeze them to make them really cold. Then, you would put them in a special machine that takes all the water out of them. This is called "drying" them. It's like all the grape juice and water that was inside the grapes is magically removed! What you're left with are dry, crispy grapes that will never go bad.

Freeze-drying is used to preserve all sorts of things, like food, medicine, and even bugs and flowers! Since there's no more water in the item, it can be stored for a really long time without spoiling. When you want to use the item again, like to eat the grapes, you just add water back in! The item will soak up the water and become juicy and fresh again. It's like you brought the grapes back to life!

So, freeze-drying is a way to make things last forever by taking all the water out of them.
