Frostweed is a type of plant that grows in certain places, like fields and woods. It gets its name because when it gets really cold outside, like below freezing, something really cool happens to it! The liquid inside the plant freezes and makes a little ice sculpture that looks really pretty.
Here's how it works: When it gets too cold for the plant to live, the liquid inside it turns into ice. But instead of just getting hard like when you freeze a popsicle, the ice makes a really thin layer that kinda looks like a crystal. It's kinda like when your mom makes ice on a hot summer day and it gets frosty on the outside of the container. But with frostweed, it looks even cooler!
Once the ice makes this pretty little layer, it cracks open and out comes a thin, clear liquid. It's sort of like when you break open a popsicle and the juice comes out, but less sticky.
Frostweed is really neat because it doesn't happen to all plants, just this special one. And even though it only lasts for a little bit until the sun comes up and warms things up again, it's still an amazing thing to see!
