ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fungus

Fungi are tiny living things that look like plants but are actually quite different. They cannot make their own food like plants do, so they have to live off of other things. Some kinds of fungi, like mushrooms, are really yummy and people like to eat them. Other kinds of fungi are not yummy and can even be harmful to people or animals.

Fungi come in many shapes and sizes. Some fungi are very small, like yeasts that make bread dough rise. Others can be very large, like mushrooms or toadstools that grow on the ground in the forest. Fungi can live in many different places, and they can grow on almost anything, including trees, rocks, and even other living things like animals.

One thing that makes fungi special is that they can break down things that other living things cannot. For example, some fungi can break down dead plants and animals and help turn them into soil. Other fungi can help break down harmful chemicals and make them less dangerous. This makes fungi very important for keeping our planet healthy!

Overall, fungi are a very interesting and important group of living things that play many different roles in the natural world.
