ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Gaelic calendar

Hello there, young one! Today we will be talking about the Gaelic calendar. So, just like how we have a calendar to keep track of days, weeks, and months, the Gaelic people had their own calendar too.

The Gaelic calendar is made up of 12 months, just like ours. But, instead of going by the names we use (like January, February, etc.), they used names associated with the seasons and important events throughout their year. The first month was called Samhain, and it marked the beginning of winter.

Each month was divided into 2 parts: the "light half" and the "dark half." The light half is when the days were getting longer, and the dark half is when the days were getting shorter. This helped them keep track of the changing seasons and when it was time to plant or harvest crops.

Unlike our calendar, the Gaelic calendar didn't necessarily start on the same day every year. It was based on the cycles of the moon, which means that some years, a month might start a little earlier or later than the year before.

Overall, the Gaelic calendar was a way for the Gaelic people to stay connected to their traditions and keep track of important events in their lives.
