ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Gas lift

Imagine you have a balloon and you want to lift it up higher. If you blow more air into the balloon, it will get bigger and rise up higher. This is kind of like gas lift.

In an oil well, sometimes they need to push the oil up to the surface because the oil is too heavy to come out on its own. So, they inject gas, like air, into the well. This makes the oil in the well lighter and easier to pump up to the surface.

The gas is injected down into the well, and it rises up through the oil, lifting it up like a balloon. This is called gas lift because it uses gas to lift things.

Gas lift is used in many oil wells all over the world to help get the oil out of the ground and into our cars and trucks.
