ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Gender self-identification

Gender self-identification means that individuals get to decide for themselves what gender they identify as. This can mean they feel like a boy, a girl, neither or both. It's important to remember that gender is not the same as biological sex which refers to the physical characteristics we are born with like chromosomes, hormones, and genitalia. Gender is something that we feel inside and it's unique to every person. Sometimes people may feel like their gender doesn't match the sex they were assigned at birth and that's okay. It's important to respect people's gender identities and use the pronouns and names that they prefer.
