George Washington was the first President of the United States. He was elected president in 1789, and he served two terms until 1797. He was a brave and wise leader who helped shape the country during the American Revolution and early years of America. He was an excellent military commander and most famously, he led the Continental Army to victory against the British in the Revolutionary War. His presidency saw the establishment of the Bill of Rights and the country's first official government. George Washington also promoted law and justice, a strong economy, and a secure international system. He was also a selfless man who refused a salary for his presidency and worked hard for the good of the nation.
