ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Geothermal exploration

Geothermal exploration means looking for hot water and rocks underground so we can use the heat to heat our houses or make electricity.

First, we use special machines that can see through the ground to find an area where there are rocks that are hot. Then, we drill a deep hole into the ground until we find the hot water and rocks.

Once we find the hot water and rocks, we need to make sure we can use the heat. We pump the hot water up through the hole, and then use the heat to create steam. The steam then turns a machine called a turbine, which makes electricity we can use in our homes.

Geothermal exploration is a special way of getting energy that is special because it uses heat from the earth instead of burning things like coal or gas, which can harm the environment. It’s like getting a hug from the earth!
