Alright kiddo, have you ever seen a really big cow before? Well, imagine if that cow was even bigger - like, as big as a house! That's what Giants of the Prairies were! Except they weren't cows, they were actually huge mammals called Bison.
These bison used to roam around the prairies - which are big, flat areas with lots of grass - in North America a long time ago. They were way bigger than the bison that you might see today. They could be as tall as 7 feet at their shoulders! That's like two of you standing on top of each other. They were also super heavy, sometimes even weighing as much as a car!
The Giants of the Prairies were important to many Native American tribes because the bison provided food, clothing, and shelter. The tribes respected and appreciated the bison and would sometimes have special ceremonies to give thanks for the bison's gifts.
Unfortunately, as more and more people started moving westward, they began to hunt the bison for their meat and furs. This caused the number of Giants of the Prairies to decrease drastically until they almost went extinct. Thankfully, people realized how important these bison were and started to protect them. Now, you can still see some of them in national parks and other protected areas.
