ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Glissando illusion

Alright kiddo, so a glissando illusion is when you hear a sound that seems to be moving up or down in pitch, but in reality it's just staying the same pitch the whole time! It's like when you look at a picture and it looks like something is moving but it's really not.

Think about playing on a playground slide. When you go down the slide, it feels like you are moving very fast and getting lower but you are really staying in the same place on the slide! That's the same idea with a glissando illusion. Your ears are tricking you into thinking the sound is changing, but really it's just staying the same.

This kind of auditory illusion happens because your brain can be easily tricked by certain sounds. Just like how your eyes can be tricked by optical illusions, your ears can be tricked by sounds that have certain patterns.

So next time you hear a sound that seems to be moving up or down, remember it might just be a glissando illusion!
