ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Gloss (optics)

When you look at something shiny, like a mirror or a polished toy, you can sometimes see your own reflection in it. This happens because of something called "gloss."

Gloss is a special quality that makes shiny things look bright and smooth. It comes from the way that light bounces off the surface of the object and back into your eyes.

Imagine you're standing in front of a big, colorful ball. When light hits the ball, some of it gets absorbed and some of it gets reflected back out. The colors you see on the ball are actually the colors of the light that's being reflected.

Now imagine that the ball has a shiny, smooth surface. When light hits the surface of the ball, it doesn't get absorbed as much as it would with a rough, bumpy surface. Instead, it bounces off the surface like a ball on a trampoline, reflecting back into your eyes. This creates a clear, bright image of whatever is around the ball, including you!

That's what gloss is all about. It's the way that light reflects off of a shiny surface and makes it look smooth and bright. Glossy surfaces are often used in things like cars and appliances, where people want a smooth, shiny finish that looks nice and is easy to clean.
