ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Glottalic consonant

So, you know how we make sounds with our voice by breathing out and moving the air through our throat and mouth? Well, sometimes when we make certain sounds, we use something called our glottis.

The glottis is like a little flap in our throat that we can control to make different sounds. When we make a glottalic consonant, we use our glottis to stop or release the air flow in a way that makes a special sound.

For example, you know the sound you make when you say "uh-oh"? That little stop between the "uh" and the "oh" is actually a glottalic consonant! You're briefly stopping the air flow with your glottis to make that sound.

There are different kinds of glottalic consonants, but they all involve using your glottis to control the air flow in a special way to make different sounds.
