ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Gonochorism

Imagine you are playing with some toy animals. You have both boy and girl animals, right? Well, just like your toy animals, many real animals also have boy and girl parts.

When an animal has both boy and girl parts, we call it "hermaphroditism." But some animals only have boy parts or only have girl parts. When an animal only has one type of part, we call it "gonochorism."

So, what does this mean for the animal? Well, animals that are gonochoristic can't reproduce by themselves. They need another animal with the opposite parts to make babies. For example, a male animal needs a female animal to make babies. And a female animal needs a male animal to make babies.

This is different from hermaphroditic animals, which can sometimes make babies by themselves or with another animal of the same type.

Overall, gonochorism is just a fancy word for when an animal only has boy or girl parts and needs another animal with the opposite parts to make babies.
