ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Graphical user interface

A graphical user interface, or GUI for short, is a way to use a computer that looks more like a picture book than a bunch of complicated codes. It's like having a pretend store where everything you want to do is shown to you in pictures, and you just have to click on the picture to make it happen.

Think about it like this - when you want to use your computer, you don't want to remember long and confusing commands in order to get things done like opening a program or typing a document. The GUI is a way to simplify that process by showing you buttons, icons, and pictures that represent the things you want to do.

For example, when you want to open a program, you can just click on its icon and it will open up on your screen. You don't have to type in a big, complicated command or remember the name of the program. You can also move files around by clicking and dragging them with your mouse instead of typing in a bunch of text commands.

The GUI is especially useful for people who are new to using a computer, or those who aren't good at memorizing long commands. It allows anyone to use a computer without needing to be a computer expert. So, in short, a graphical user interface is like having a picture book to help you use your computer.
