Greek diacritics

Greek diacritics are symbols like dots, lines and accents that are sometimes put above letters to change how a word is pronounced. The symbols make it easier to read and understand a word by giving clues about the correct way to say it. For example, a word with a diacritic may be pronounced differently than a word without a diacritic.
