ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ground fault

Okay kiddo, you know how we have electrical outlets and cords to plug in our toys? Well, sometimes electricity can escape the path it's supposed to travel along and that's called a ground fault.

Think of it like a car driving on a road and instead of staying on the road, it goes off into the grass. The electricity is supposed to travel through the wires in the walls and cords, but sometimes it can go into the ground instead. This can happen if there's something wrong with the wires or if you touch an appliance with a frayed cord.

Ground faults can be very dangerous because if you touch the electricity that has gone into the ground, it can give you a big shock or even hurt you really badly. That's why you should always be careful around electrical things and not touch them with wet hands or when you're standing in water.

To stop ground faults from happening, houses have special devices called ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) that can detect when electricity is going in the wrong place and cut it off before it can hurt anyone. It's like having a super hero watching over your electrical stuff to keep you safe.
