Hair ice

Hair ice is a really cool thing that happens when you have a combination of certain things. First, you need some really cold weather - colder than the inside of your freezer! Then, you need a very special kind of fungus that grows on dead wood. This fungus helps create the hair ice.

The fungus takes water that is inside the wood, and turns it into ice. As it does this, the ice is pushed out of the wood in the form of really thin hair-like strands. This is why it is called hair ice!

It looks kind of like spaghetti, but it's made of ice, and it can grow up to several feet long! It usually happens at night, when the air is very cold and the ground is covered in frost.

Even though it's ice, it feels soft and bendy, kind of like cotton candy. But don't touch it too much or it will melt!

So there you have it, hair ice is a natural phenomenon where cold weather and a special fungus create really thin strands of ice that look like hair. It's very cool to see, but don't touch it too much or it will melt!
