ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Handedness

Handedness is the way we choose to use our hands to do things like writing, eating, and throwing. Some people use their right hand to do these things, some use their left, and some people can use both hands equally.

It's not really clear why some people prefer to use their right hand and some prefer their left. We think it might have something to do with how our brains are wired.

In general, most people are right-handed, but about 10% of the population is left-handed. Some people think left-handed people are very special because they are in the minority, but really there's nothing wrong with being either right or left-handed.

Sometime parents, teachers and coaches try to encourage kids to use their right hand if they're left-handed because it's easier to find tools, like scissors, designed for righties. But if you're left-handed, it's actually better for you to use left-handed tools.

So, whether you're left or right-handed or even ambidextrous (able to use both hands), it's all normal and there's nothing to be worried about it.
