ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hangzhou dialect

Okay kiddo, so you know how people from different parts of the world speak different languages and sometimes even people from the same place can speak a little different? Well, Hangzhou is a city in China and the people who live there speak a special way of Chinese called the Hangzhou dialect.

It's kind of like how people in the southern United States might say "y'all" instead of "you all" or "pop" instead of "soda". Hangzhou people have their own special words and way of saying things that might be a little different than people who speak other types of Chinese.

For example, instead of saying "wo jin tian chi le fan", which means "I ate rice today" in standard Chinese, someone who speaks the Hangzhou dialect might say "wo zhe lir chi le fen" instead.

So, basically, the Hangzhou dialect is just a special way of speaking Chinese that the people who live there use. It's really cool to learn about the different ways people use language!
