Hans Bethe was a very smart man who was born a long time ago in a country called Germany. He was really good at thinking about science and math and figuring out how things work. One of the things he is most famous for is figuring out how the sun and other stars make their energy.
You know how you need food to give you energy to play and run around? Well, the sun needs something called "fuel" to give it energy too. But instead of food, the sun needs something called "hydrogen."
Bethe figured out that the sun takes the hydrogen and turns it into something called helium. This might sound like a magic trick, but it's actually really complicated science.
Basically, the sun smashes the hydrogen atoms together really hard and fast to make a bigger atom - helium - and in the process, it releases a bunch of energy. This energy is what powers the sun and makes it so hot and bright.
Bethe won lots of awards for figuring all this science out, but he was also a very kind and caring person who loved teaching other people about science too.
