Alright kiddo, have you ever seen a horse race before? It’s when a bunch of horses run really fast around a track. Well, harness racing is kind of like that, but the horse has a special piece of equipment called a harness that attaches to a cart called a sulky.
The harness holds the horse in place and the sulky is pulled behind the horse. The person driving the sulky, called the driver or the jockey, sits in the sulky and guides the horse around the track.
Now, in harness racing, the horse isn’t allowed to run as fast as it possibly can right away. Instead, the horse has to stay in a specific gait or pace the whole time. It’s like when you’re running around the playground and your teacher tells you to jog instead of sprinting all out.
The idea is to see which horse is the fastest at maintaining that gait or pace, and the driver’s job is to make sure their horse stays in that gait the entire time.
Harness racing is a really exciting sport to watch because the horses go so fast and the drivers have to be really skilled to steer the horse correctly. Plus, there are often lots of races happening throughout the day at the racetrack, so you can keep cheering on new horses and drivers all day long!
