Hartwick's rule

Hartwick's rule is a fancy way of saying that we should only use as much natural resources as we can replace.

Imagine you have a toybox with lots of toys inside. You can play with as many toys as you want, but you should always try to put them back when you are finished. If you take all the toys out of the box and don't put any back, soon there will be no toys left to play with! That's why it's important to put some back, so you can keep playing and having fun.

The same thing applies to natural resources like trees, water, and minerals. We can use them to build homes, make paper, or create electricity, but we should always make sure we are not using more than we can replace. Otherwise, we might run out of these resources and not have any left for future generations to use.

That's why Hartwick's rule reminds us to be responsible and think about the long term. Let's use what we need, but also make sure we take care of our planet so it can keep providing for us in the future.
