ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Harvesting lightning energy

Electricity runs through the sky called lightning. It's a big spark that happens when there's a lot of energy building up in the air. Scientists and engineers are trying to figure out ways to catch that energy and turn it into a kind of power we can use to make machines work and your lights turn on.

To do this, they need to make special equipment that can safely catch the lightning without getting damaged by the big spark. They use something called a lightning rod, which is like a tall stick that goes up into the sky. The lightning will hit the rod instead of hitting something else that could break.

Once the lightning hits the rod, it will create a big bunch of electricity that travels through wires and goes into a big battery. That battery will then store the electricity and let us use it later when we need it.

But catching lightning is really hard and dangerous! It's like trying to catch a really fast and powerful animal that can hurt you if you're not careful. So scientists and engineers are still trying to figure out the best ways to do this and make it safe for everyone.
