ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hatching

Well little one, hatching is when a baby animal, like a bird or turtle, comes out of an egg! The egg is like a house for the baby, giving it everything it needs to grow big and strong before it's ready to come out into the world.

Inside the egg, the baby is curled up in a snug little ball called an embryo. The embryo eats the yolk in the egg to give it all the energy it needs to grow. As the baby grows, it starts to develop things like muscles and bones that it will need to be active once it hatches.

When it's time for the baby to come out, it starts pecking at the shell of the egg with a sharp little beak. Slowly but surely, it'll create a tiny crack in the shell. Over time, it'll make the crack bigger and bigger until it can finally push its way out of the egg!

Once it's out, the baby is still very small and weak. It'll spend a lot of time in a cozy nest or burrow getting fed and warmed up until it's big enough to explore the world on its own. And that, my little friend, is the magic of hatching!
