ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Height above sea level

Hi there! Do you know what a sea is? It's a very big body of salty water that covers a big part of the Earth.

Now, imagine you're standing on a beach looking out at the sea. If you walk straight ahead, you'll eventually reach the point where the land starts to go upward in elevation. This is called a hill or a mountain.

When we talk about height above sea level, we're talking about how high up you are compared to where the sea starts. The higher up you go, the higher your elevation is relative to sea level.

Think of a ruler that measures your height - instead of measuring how tall you are, we're measuring how high up you are compared to the sea level. If you're standing on top of a mountain and your altitude is 2,000 meters, that means you're 2,000 meters above the sea level down below.

This is important because it tells us a lot of things about the climate and geography of a particular area. Areas at higher elevations are usually colder and may not get as much rain, while areas at lower elevations are usually warmer and get more rain. Additionally, different animals and plants can live at different elevations depending on their tolerance for the climate.

So the next time you see a map with different elevations marked on it, you'll know that it's talking about how high up the land is compared to the sea down below.
