ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Henry Fox Talbot

Henry Fox Talbot was a very smart man who lived a long time ago. He was born in the year 1800, which is a long time before you were born.

When Henry was young, he liked to study and learn new things. He especially liked to study science and how things worked.

One day, while Henry was on a trip to Italy, he saw a beautiful view of the city of Pisa from his hotel window. He wanted to keep the memory of that view forever, so he tried to draw it. But no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't make it look just like the real thing.

So Henry had an idea. He thought that maybe he could use a special kind of paper to capture the image of what he saw, like a camera. He called his idea "photography."

Henry went back home to England and worked on his idea for a long time. He made a special camera and special paper that could capture the image of things he saw. When he took a picture with his camera, the image would appear on the paper.

Henry's invention was very important because it allowed people to take pictures of things they wanted to remember or share with others. Before that, people had to rely on drawing or painting.

Today, we have much more advanced cameras and technology to take pictures, but we still use the same basic idea that Henry had: capturing an image on paper or a computer.
