ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Heritage language learning

Heritage language learning is when you learn a language that your family or ancestors spoke, but you might not speak it very well or at all.

For example, let's say your family originally came from Spain, but you were born and raised in the United States and only speak English. Your parents might have spoken Spanish to you when you were younger, but as you grew up, you started to speak more English and might have forgotten some of the Spanish words and grammar.

Heritage language learning helps you to improve your ability to speak, read, and write in your family's language, so you can better communicate with your family, connect with your culture, and understand your family's history.

It's like learning a new language, but it's also like remembering a language you might have learned when you were younger. The process can be challenging, but it's worth it to be able to connect with your family and culture in a deeper way.
