ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Highest temperature recorded on Earth

Ok kiddo, have you ever played with a thermometer? It’s a tool that measures how hot or cold something is. Imagine that the whole world is like a big thermometer and we humans are trying to measure how hot it can get!

Well, the highest temperature ever recorded on Earth was 134 degrees Fahrenheit (or 56.7°C) in a place called Furnace Creek Ranch, which is located in Death Valley, California, USA. That’s super hot!

Death Valley is already a very dry and hot place, like a giant oven. But in the summer of 1913, it was even hotter because of a heatwave that lasted many days. During this time, the air became so hot that it felt like you were standing inside an oven!

This is not a temperature that anyone would want to be out in for a long time because it can be really dangerous for our bodies. It is very important to stay cool and safe when it is very hot outside. That’s why we have things like air conditioning and water to drink to help us stay comfortable and healthy.
