ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hill fort

A hill fort is like a giant castle made of dirt and stones built way up high on a hill or mountain. It was used a long time ago by people to live in and protect themselves from enemies who might try to attack them.

The people who built these forts usually chose hills or mountains that were hard to climb, so that enemies would have a tough time trying to get to them. They would pile up big rocks and dirt to create walls all around the fort, and sometimes even built walls inside the fort to make it even more difficult for enemies to break in.

People who lived in these forts would usually grow their own food and keep animals or livestock inside. They had to be careful not to be seen by enemies, so they would often put up lookout towers to see any incoming danger.

Overall, hill forts were very important places for people to live in and protect themselves a long time ago. They were like giant fortresses way up high on hills or mountains, where people could live, grow their own food, and keep themselves safe from harm.
