Hillfort

A hillfort is like a special kind of house that's built on top of a really big hill. The hill is like a big natural fortress, so when people build their house on top of it, it's much harder for bad guys to get to them.

To make it even harder for the bad guys, the people who built the hillfort would often dig a ditch around the bottom of the hill, and build up high walls all around the top. There might even be a big wooden gate that could be closed to keep out attackers.

People used to live in hillforts a really long time ago, in ancient times. They were important because they helped keep people safe during wars and battles. They also had farming and animals inside the hillfort, so people could live there for a long time without needing to leave.
