ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Himeyuri students

Himeyuri students were a group of about 200 high school aged girls from Okinawa, Japan who were called up during World War II to serve in a nursing unit at the end of the war. These girls were between the ages of 15 and 18 and had to do a variety of medical duties like caring for the wounded, preparing food and other medical tasks. They worked in difficult conditions, often facing danger and even death. Many of them died while serving during the war. They are remembered by many in Japan today as a symbol of courage and sacrifice.
