ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Hippasus

Hippasus was a man who lived a very long time ago in ancient Greece. He was very smart and liked to ask lots of questions about numbers and how they worked.

One day, he found out something really interesting. He figured out that there were some numbers that couldn't be written as a fraction or a ratio of two numbers. This was a big deal because up until then, people had thought that every number could be written as a fraction.

This discovery by Hippasus was very important for math because it helped people understand that there were some things in math that were still a mystery and couldn't be explained.

Unfortunately, this discovery also made some people angry because it went against what they believed. Hippasus was punished for his discovery and had to leave his town. But now, we remember him as an important person in the history of math who helped us understand more about numbers and their mysteries.
