Hippocras

Hippocras is a special drink that people used to make a long time ago. Do you know what spices are? They are things like cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg that make our food taste really good. Well, hippocras is a special drink made by mixing red wine with these yummy spices and adding some sugar to make it sweeter.

First, adults would take some red wine and pour it into a big pot. Then, they would add lots of tasty spices like cinnamon and ginger to the pot. They would stir everything together until the spices mixed in with the wine.

Then, they would add some sugar to the pot to make it taste sweeter. After that, they would carefully heat up the pot on the stove, but not cook it- just warm it up a little bit. This helps all the flavors of the spices spread around in the wine so it tastes really good!

Finally, the adults would strain out all the chunky bits of spices so there’s nothing left in the hippocras but smooth, tasty wine.

And that's how hippocras is made! People used to drink it to celebrate special occasions or just when they wanted something sweet and flavorful to drink.
