Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, there was a land called Denmark. People first started living in this land more than 10,000 years ago. That's longer than you can even imagine!
Denmark has a very long history, but here are some of the most important things to know:
In the Viking Age, which was from around the 8th to the 11th century AD, Danish people were known for being great sailors. They often went on long voyages to raid other lands and collect treasure. They also had their own gods and goddesses, like Odin and Thor, and loved to tell stories about them.
Later on, Denmark became its own kingdom with its own kings and queens. Some of the most famous Danish monarchs were King Canute the Great, who ruled over parts of England as well as Denmark, and Queen Margrethe I, who united Denmark, Norway, and Sweden into one big kingdom.
In the 19th century, Denmark became a constitutional monarchy, which means that the king or queen is no longer the one with all the power. Instead, there is a government that makes decisions and the king or queen is more of a figurehead.
Today, Denmark is known for many things, like its beautiful countryside, its delicious food (especially pastries!), and its happy citizens. It's also very famous for its design, with many Danish designers creating sleek and modern furniture, clothing, and other products.
