History of Turkey

Turkey is a country located in a place called Eurasia, which is part of both the continents Europe and Asia. A long, long time ago in the land that is now called Turkey, there were lots of different groups of people living there.

One of the earliest known people to live in Turkey were the Hittites. They were really good at making weapons and they used their weapons to conquer other lands. Later, the Greeks and the Romans ruled over Turkey for a while. In fact, one of the most famous parts of Turkey, Istanbul, was once called Constantinople and was the capital of the Roman Empire.

As time passed, different groups of people came to Turkey and conquered it. These people included the Byzantines, the Seljuks, and the Ottomans. The Ottomans were a really powerful group and they ruled over Turkey for a really long time. They built a huge empire that included many different countries in Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa.

The Ottomans continued to rule for hundreds of years until World War I when they were on the losing side. After the war, Turkey had a big change and became a republic. A man named Mustafa Kemal Atatürk became the first president and he made lots of new rules and laws to help Turkey become a modern country.

Atatürk wanted Turkey to be a secular country- that meant that religion would not be involved in government decisions. He introduced many changes that modernized Turkey, like switching the Turkish alphabet from Arabic script to Latin script, giving women more rights, and making education compulsory.

Today, Turkey is a very modern and diverse country with lots of different people, cultures and religions living there. It has a rich history and many amazing sites to visit, like the ancient city of Ephesus, the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul.
