ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of air travel

Well kiddo, a long time ago, people couldn't fly in the air like birds, they had to travel on land or water. But as time went by, people started to dream of flying. They tried different ways to make things fly, like they made kites and balloons. But those were just little things, they couldn't hold people.

Then in the early 20th century, some very clever people wanted to make something really big that could carry people into the air. They dreamt of creating big machines that could fly like birds. And they did it! They made the first airplanes.

At first, airplanes were just little machines that flew short distances. But as people kept inventing and improving them, airplanes grew bigger and stronger. They could fly longer distances, fly higher up into the sky and carry more passengers.

Soon, flying became more and more popular. People started to travel all over the world in airplanes. For the first time, you could be in one country one day and then be in another country the next day! And people started to see the world in a whole new way.

But there were also some tough times for air travel. Sometimes, things went wrong and planes crashed. This made people scared to fly. But the people who made airplanes kept working hard to make them safer and more reliable. Nowadays, flying is one of the safest ways to travel.

Today, flying is a big part of our lives. We have big airports where planes take off and land every minute. We can fly from one side of the world to the other in just one day. And that's all thanks to the brilliant people who had a dream to make the impossible, possible.
