Entropy is a concept that comes from the field of physics and chemistry. It basically means how much energy is spread out among all the particles in a system. Over time, entropy tends to increase, so that particles are spread out and evenly distributed. This concept was developed in the 19th century by German physicist Rudolf Clausius. He realized that energy was always spreading out and becoming more evenly distributed. He compared this to a cake that starts out with many different colored frosting swirls and then gradually blends as the cake is cut and served, so that all of the different colors slowly combine. This idea of entropy continues to be an important part in physics and chemistry today.
