Fishing is when people catch fish from rivers, lakes, oceans, and other bodies of water. People have been fishing for a very long time, like hundreds and thousands of years ago, even before we had supermarkets to buy food from.
At first, people fished with their bare hands, or they used sharpened sticks or rocks to spear the fish. Then, they discovered that they could use woven nets to catch more fish at once. Later, they started using boats to catch fish in deeper water.
Some societies developed complex systems of fishing and made fish an important part of their diet. In ancient Egypt, people fished with nets and put fish in ponds to farm them. In Japan, people developed a method called ‘Koi’ where they would use breeding to develop larger fish to eat.
As technology improved, people developed new fishing methods like trawling, where large nets were dragged along the ocean floor to catch fish, and longlining, where boats drop a long line with hooks to catch fish. These new methods led to overfishing which hurt fish populations and created environmental problems.
Today, fishing is a big industry around the world but there are strict fishing regulations to protect fish populations from being overfished. People can fish for recreational purposes too, which means fishing for fun rather than for food.
