History of scrolls

Okay, kiddo, have you ever seen a fancy piece of paper with writing or pictures on it that can roll up like a tube? That's called a scroll! People have been using scrolls for a very, very long time - even before books were invented!

A really long time ago, like over 5000 years ago, people in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia used scrolls to write down important things like religious texts, laws, and stories. They would make the scrolls out of papyrus or animal skins and write on them with ink. Then they would roll them up and tie them with a string to keep them safe.

As time went on, people all over the world started using scrolls to write things down. In China, they made scrolls out of silk and used brushes to write with. In Japan, they made scrolls out of paper and wrote poems and paintings on them.

But using scrolls could be tricky - if you wanted to read something towards the end of the scroll, you had to unroll the whole thing! That's why people started making books with pages that you can flip. It was much easier to find the page you wanted, and you didn't have to worry about damaging the scroll by unrolling it too much.

People still use scrolls today for special occasions, like weddings or religious ceremonies. And some artists even like to paint on scrolls because it gives their artwork a cool old-fashioned feel. So that's the history of scrolls - a really long time ago, people used them to write down important things and keep them safe, and now they're mostly used for special occasions and art projects.
