ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of the Portuguese language

Do you know what a language is? It's a way for people to communicate with each other using words and grammar.

Now, a long, long time ago, there were people who lived in an area called the Iberian Peninsula, which is where Spain and Portugal are today. These people spoke different languages, like Celtic and Latin.

In the year 711, people from a place called Arabia, which is now Saudi Arabia, came to the Iberian Peninsula and took over. They spoke a language called Arabic, and over time, their language mixed with the local languages to create a new one called Mozarabic.

Later on, there was another group of people who came from another place, and they were called the Visigoths. They spoke a language called Gothic, and they also mixed with the local people and their language became Gothic-Portuguese.

In the year 1095, Portugal became its own country, and people there spoke a language called Old Portuguese. Over time, the language changed and evolved as people used it to communicate with each other for different things.

Now, Portuguese is spoken by over 200 million people around the world, mostly in Brazil, Portugal, and parts of Africa. People still use it to communicate with each other and tell stories. And that's the history of the Portuguese language!
