ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

History of the book

A long time ago, before there were computers and cell phones, people used to write things down on pieces of paper. These pieces of paper were called manuscripts. They were written by hand, with special tools like quills and ink.

Later on, people figured out that they could use a machine to help them make copies of manuscripts. This machine was called a printing press, and it was invented by a man named Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th century.

With the printing press, it became much easier and faster to make copies of books. People began to write more and more books, and soon there were more books than anyone could read in a lifetime.

Over time, the way books looked changed too. They went from being big and heavy to small and lightweight, like the books we have today. They also started to have pictures and illustrations, which made them even more fun to read.

Today, we can read books in lots of different ways. We can read them on our computers, our phones, or even on special devices made just for reading. But no matter how we read them, books are still an important part of our lives and our history.
