ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Homage (feudal)

Okay kiddo, do you know what a king or queen is? Good. So, a long, long time ago, there were lots of kings and queens ruling over different kingdoms. Some of them were very powerful and had lots of land and soldiers to protect their kingdom.

Now, let's say you are a knight. A knight is someone who is trained to fight and protect the king and the kingdom. You work for a powerful king who has given you land to live on and protect. But, you also want to show respect to another powerful king who lives nearby.

In order to do that, you go to the other king and do a special ceremony called "homage." Homage is when you kneel in front of the other king and swear that you will obey and protect him too, just like you do for your own king.

Basically, you are showing respect and loyalty to another powerful ruler, kind of like saying "hey, I think you're really cool and strong, and I'm willing to work for you too."

It was an important part of the feudal system, where kings would give land to their knights in exchange for their loyalty and protection. Homage was a way for knights to show that loyalty to more than one king if needed.

Hope that helps, little one!
