ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Homogeneous broadening

Homogeneous broadening is like when a group of people all slow down or speed up because someone said so. A group of atoms or molecules all move or vibrate at their own speed until something makes them all start to move or vibrate faster or slower than before. Then all the atoms or molecules will move or vibrate at the same speed, even though they started out doing different speeds. This is called homogeneous broadening.
