Hornstine v. Township of Moorestown

Hornstine v. Township of Moorestown was a court case where a 17-year-old student named Jennifer Hornstine sued her high school in Moorestown, New Jersey because she wasn't allowed to be the class valedictorian. The Moorestown High School award two students the title of valedictorian each year. Jennifer was one of the two and was then told that she would have to share the honor with another student because of her disability. Jennifer had a learning disability called Cerebral Palsy, which made it harder for her to learn and do school work than for other students.

Jennifer felt like she was being treated unfairly because of her disability and filed a lawsuit against the school, saying that they were violating her rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act. After the case went to court, the judge decided that Moorestown High School had treated Jennifer unfairly based on her disability and she should be allowed to keep the title of valedictorian. This case set an important legal precedent because it showed that people with disabilities could not be treated differently than people without disabilities.
